And with prostate cancer you have a fairly big chance it can be cured. But you just have to accept it. Some one-and-a –half years ago they discovered I had prostate cancer, by chance. When the urologist gave me the news it came as a shock and for the next few days I was very quiet, just tried to process it. And after that I started fighting ‘What can I do about it? How do I deal with this?’ In the Netherlands there is a national statute for every type of cancer, and it says that with, in this case prostate cancer, it can be treated with surgery, external radiotherapy or brachytherapy. All three treatments are possible and the chances of recovery are roughly the same. The different treatments I could choose from were: complete removal of the prostate, brachytherapy and external radiotherapy. The reason I chose brachytherapy is that with this I have the least chance of incontinence and impotence. With the other two treatments chances were bigger. I assumed all three therapies gave an equal chance of curing the cancer. If I can decide for myself, obviously I choose what fits me best. I think about the quality of life and what is important.
