Robotic Surgery On Good Day New York

Dr. David Samadi discusses the benefits of robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgery on Good Day New York. Also referred to as a robotic prostatectomy, the surgery treats prostate cancer by removing the prostate from the patient’s body. Advancements in robotics technology have allowed for this to be done with major benefits over traditional open and laparoscopic treatment options, including shorter operation times, shorter hospital stays, minimal blood loss, and less risk to the delicate nerves around the prostate that control continence and sexual function. Comparing Prostate Cancer Treatment Options – Robotic Surgery Vs. Watchful Waiting

Over 200000 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. The New England Journal of Medicine has just released a new study showing the long-term benefits of two different common methods of prostate cancer treatment, watchful waiting and surgical prostate removal (most commonly done now through a procedure called a robotic prostatectomy). Dr. David Samadi, member of the Fox News Medical “A-Team” and Vice Chair of Urology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC, discusses this study and the role that robotic surgery can play in preventing deaths due to prostate cancer. Watchful waiting is a technique used by doctors where prostate cancer indicators, such as PSA levels, are used to monitor a patient’s risk of developing an aggressive form of the disease. In many cases prostate cancer is slow growing, and treatment may not be necessary as the cancer will never progress to a life-threatening point. Robotic prostate surgery takes a different approach to treatment, removing the prostate entirely from the body to eliminate all traces of the cancer. The study released by the NEJM shows that there is a large survival benefit for those who choose prostate removal as a treatment option; with a 38% lower risk of death versus watchful waiting. This is very important news for individuals who are deciding on an appropriate treatment method. With advancements in prostate surgery due to newer robotic methods, patients often don’t experience many of the side-effects associated with

Prostate Cancer Treatment | Colorado Cyberknife VSI Prostate Cancer Surgery

www.coloradocyberknife.com The first published five-year outcomes on low risk prostate cancer patients treated with the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System. The multi-center study, published in the January 10, 2011 issue of Radiation Oncology, found that 93 percent of patients had no recurrence of their cancer at a median follow-up of five years, a rate that compares favorably to results obtained with other treatment modalities, including surgery and conventional radiation therapy. “As a non-invasive treatment option completed in just five visits, stereotactic radiotherapy with the CyberKnife System offers patients the benefits of more rapid recovery, reduced travel costs and less time off work, allowing them to return to their normal, daily routines almost immediately as compared with the standard nine-week course of radiotherapy,” said Christopher King, MD, an author on the study who is now an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and Urology at the UCLA School of Medicine. “In addition, because CyberKnife radiosurgery costs less than conventional radiation and avoids the anesthesia and hospital stay associated with surgery, our national health care system benefits from reduced health care costs.”

Minimally Invasive Prostate Surgery

Sometimes prostate cancer treatment requires surgery to remove the gland. Prostatectomy, whether performed as a traditional open surgery, a minimally invasive procedure, or with the assistance of a robot, can help men diagnosed with prostate cancer. In this clip, Dr. J.
